This view across the A171 is looking north towards Ruston at the location of Gallows Hill Bridge. As can be seen, there is little evidence that a railway ever passed by here.
The Forge Valley Line crossed the Pickering to Scarborough main road, now the A170 twice. The first crossing heading east, was at Gallows Hill, between Sawdon Station and Ruston village where the road passed above the railway. The line climbed at 1 in 80 towards Ruston, the steepest gradient on the line.
Gallows Hill bridge was demolished in 1966 and the road lowered to allow for better visibility.
