Scarborough - Station Masters & Staff
In 1891 there were over 120 staff employed at Scarborough.
Mr Henry Mutch Horsley started work at Scarborough Goods Yard as a junior clerk in 1862, with a wage of £15 a year. He started a ledger which recorded the names and details of every employee in the goods yard from 1870. By 1890 his status was Goods Agent.
Mr Jack F. Layton started his railway career as a clerk at Forge Valley in 1941, while at the same time his father was goods agent at Gallows Close. He served at many other stations in the area including most between York & Scarborough. After serving four years for his country, he became a clerk at Thornton Dale. He went on to be the last station master at Scarborough (Central) from 1959 until 16th November 1982. He was said to be the youngest station master ever appointed to Scarborough.
